Super Bowl 1968

Super Bowl II was awarded to Miami following an owner’s meeting in New York on May 25, 1967, and it attracted a sell-out crowd.

In addition to being the NFL Champions in 1967, the Packers also posted a 9-4-1 record, rising to victory over the Dallas Cowboys during the end of season NFL Championship Game. The Raiders had won their place in Super Bowl II having successfully triumphed over the Houston Oilers in the AFL Championship Game.

• The big talk surrounding the second Super Bowl game was not focused on who would win, but whether the legendary coach Vince Lombardi was going to retire after the game. It did, indeed, turn out to be Vince Lombardi’s last game as coach of the Packers, and he resigned shortly after taking his team to victory.
• Super Bowl II was the first Super Bowl to be televised live on a single network. Ever since, the networks have bid it out to win the rights to televise the game.
• It was the first game in America’s football history to attract a $3-million gate.
• It was the first Super Bowl to use Y-shaped goalposts, which had featured in both AFL and NFL games toward the end of the season.

As was the case with Super Bowl I, coming into this game, pundits largely expected the Green Bay Packers to reign supreme against the Oakland Raiders AFL team. Their predictions once again became a reality with the Packers defeating their adversary by 33 points to 14.

During the game, the Raider’s quarterback Daryle Lamonica was the team’s only player to score, successfully completing two touchdown passes. On the opposing team, Don Chandler scored four field goals, three of which were from within the first half, and Herb Adderley successfully executed a 60-yard interception return to score a touchdown.

For the second year in a row, Bart Starr was named the MVP, having successfully caught 13 of 24 passes for 202 yards, scoring one touchdown.
