In May of this year, it was announced that Atlanta, Georgia had won the competition to host the 2019 Super Bowl, edging out competition from Tampa and Miami in Florida.
Atlanta’s bid, which was entitled “Atlanta Transformed,” placed a specific emphasis on how the stadium at which the 2019 Super Bowl would be held was ideally located to new downtown attractions that hadn’t yet been constructed when the Super Bowl was hosted at the Georgia Dome in 1994 and 2000.
However, is seems to be a new stadium, once again, that transpired to have been a big plus for the winning bid. The $1.4bln Mercedes-Benz stadium, scheduled for completion in time for the start of the 2017 season, featuring a retractable roof and a 71,000 seat regular capacity, with the option to increase to 75,000 for large-scale events such as the Super Bowl. Other highlights of the new stadium include the largest electronic video board in the NFL, a 100-yard bar that stretches the full length of the field, and a total of 190 suites, with a total of 7,500 club seats, and 6 clubs, two of which have field-level seating on the sideline with exclusive access to players on game day. The clubs are designed to provide a unique environment with up-scale dining and full-service bars. The stadium will be located near to the Georgia Dome, where the Atlanta Falcons currently play, which is positioned to the west of downtown Atlanta.
Atlanta’s bid committee disclosed that the cost of hosting the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta would cost around $46 million.
This will be the third Super Bowl held by Atlanta and the first since Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. Home of the Falcons, the Atlanta metropolitan area has a population of over 5 million residents, the largest metropolitan area in the United States, and it serves as a hub for transport, logistics, media, information technology, and professional services. The Atlanta Falcons themselves have played in the NFL since expansion in 1965, although they have only one Super Bowl appearance to date at Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999, which they lost to the defending champion Denver Broncos.
