The Who Super Bowl Halftime Show

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE 2010 SUPER BOWL?

The competition to host the 2010 Super Bowl was originally won by New York on March 23 2005, beating out bids from Atlanta, Huston, and Miami. However, this was conditional on the completion of the West Side Stadium, the proposed new home of the New York Jets, by 2008. Following wrangling over the funding for the stadium and the withdrawal of $400 million by New York state officials, the NFL re-opened the process with a view to reconsidering the unsuccessful candidates. On October 6 2006, Miami was selected to host the Super Bowl at Sun Life Stadium (formerly Joe Robbie Stadium), making it the tenth time the season finale had been held in the Miami metro area and the home of the Dolphins.

This Super Bowl marked the last time a unique logo was used for every bowl. From 2011 onwards, the logo was fixed to show the Vince Lombardi trophy, with only the Roman Numeral changing every year.

The television broadcast, with an average of 111 million views, made the game the most watched Super Bowl ever. In fact, this Super Bowl became the most watched television program in American history, overtaking the final episode of M.A.S.H., which had held the record for 20 long years!

With kick-off on February 7 (the latest ever for a Super Bowl), both the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts went into the game evenly matched, with records of 13-3 and 14-2 respectively in the regular season and having both won their respective conferences, the first time in 16 years that both number one seeds have contested the Super Bowl. The Saints, however, were new to the Super Bowl, having never made it all the way through the post season before.

With the Saints behind 10-6 at halftime, the second half kick-off proved to be a turning point when New Orleans successfully recovered a surprise onside kick that they deployed to re-start the game. This Saints then stormed down the field with a 58-yard drive, consisting of 5 consecutive completed passes and not a single third down. The sequence ended with a short pass to the right and into the hands of Pierre Thomas who carried the football 16-yards behind effective blocking to run in the touchdown. The Colts responded with a 4-yard touchdown run to restore the lead at 17-13. However, the momentum was with the Saints, and they reeled off 18 unanswered points to secure their first ever Super Bowl win. The highlights of the game included Tracy Porter’s 74-yard touchdown interception and quarterback Drew Brees’ completed 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, the latter tying the record with Tom Brady for Super Bowl completions and winning the MVP award in the process.
