Gloria Estefan Super Bowl Halftime Show

WHAT HAPPENED AT 1992 SUPER BOWL?

Super Bowl XXVI was awarded to Minneapolis following the NFL owner’s New Orleans meeting on May 24, 1989. Minneapolis battled off stiff competition to win the rights to host the game.

Super Bowl XXVI was played between the AFC’s Buffalo Bills and NFC’s Washington Redskins on January 16, 1992, at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to decide which team would be crowned champions of the 1991 football season.

The Washington Redskins emerged victorious with a score of 37-24.

Noteworthy for:

  • The temperatures in Minneapolis are relatively low in January, and the game was played in a temperature around -3C. To date, it remains the northernmost Super Bowl to be played.
  • During the pregame show, a live link was set up between astronauts aboard the STS-42 space shuttle mission, which was in orbit during the game. Three of the mission’s crew performed a “human coin toss” in outer space, much to the spectators’ amusement.
  • Joe Gibbs, the head coach of the Redskins became only the third coach in NFL history to win three Super Bowls.

The Redskins outshone the Bills to land their third Super Bowl victory in 10 years as quarterback Mark Rypien passed for 292 yards and two touchdowns, securing him the most valuable player award. His 18 of 33 passes included a 10 yard scoring pass to Earnest Bayer and a 30 yard touchdown pass to Gary Clark, which came late in the third quarter after the Bills had finally mounted a challenge that saw the Redskins lead reduced from 24-0 to 24-10, effectively putting the game beyond Buffalo.

Washington increased their lead to 37-10, but the bills kept it competitive with two touchdowns in the final six minutes.

The Redskins managed to build a 17-0 halftime lead, despite struggling early on in the game where 3 drives inside the Bills 20-yard line yielded on 3 points. When the games restarted after the halftime break, Kurt Gouveia intercepted a pass from Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and returned it 23 yards to Buffalo’s 2 yard line.

Gerald Riggs scored his second touchdown of the game on the next play to give the Redskins a commanding 24-0 lead. Desperately trying to get the Bills back into the game, Kelly passed for a Super Bowl record 58 attempts, completing 28 for 25 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The cost of so many passes, however, was four interceptions.

Star Bills running back Thurman Thomas, who during the regular season recorded an AFC best 1,407 rushing yards and an NFL best total yardage of 2,028, managed only 13 yards from 10 carries and on four completed passes could only manage 27 yards.

The normally explosive Bills were limited to just 283 yards compared to 417 for the Redskins, with Clark completing seven catches for 114 yards and Art Monk chipping in with seven receptions for 113.

Super Bowl XXVI MVP was Rypien, who successfully completed 18 out of 33 passes for 292 yards, executed one interception, and scored two touchdowns.
